Google Chrome for Android Introduces Feature-Packed 'Listen to this Page' Tool

Google is taking steps to enhance the accessibility of its Chrome browser for Android by integrating a text-to-speech feature. This feature, known as "Listen to this page," is aimed at making it more convenient for users to have web content read aloud.

While Google Assistant already offers a text-to-speech function on Android devices, it has seen diminishing usefulness over time. Google's Reading Mode app, designed for individuals with low vision, blindness, and dyslexia, has emerged as a more effective alternative. However, Google is now planning to embed a version of this tool directly into Chrome, potentially simplifying the process of listening to content on the web.

In the latest Chrome version 120, there's a flag (chrome://flags#read-aloud) specifically for Android users, but the actual use of the feature requires Chrome 121. Although Chrome 121 is currently in the early release stage and mostly accessible as a beta version, it promises a noteworthy user experience.

When the "Listen to this page" option is selected from the overflow menu, a seamlessly integrated bottom bar module appears. This module displays the page title, the current website, a pause/play button with a timeline, and other interactive features. Users can tap to expand this module, revealing additional information and buttons. The expanded view shows the estimated reading time, buttons to skip forward or backward by 10 seconds, an overflow button for highlighting text, automatic scrolling, voice selection, and playback speed adjustment. The playback speed can be fine-tuned to various options (0.5x, 0.8x, 1x, 1.2x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x).

While the playback continues when the phone is locked or other tabs are browsed within Chrome, it pauses when using another app or closing Chrome, which might be a bit inconvenient for users.

In essence, Google's effort to integrate the "Listen to this page" tool directly into Chrome enriches the browsing experience, providing users with a promising text-to-voice functionality.
